The VA Inspector General's 13th annual staffing report says VHA officials reported 4,712 severe occupational staffing shortages — and states on its first page that it collected officials' opinions, did not validate them, and is a descriptive review of VHA reporting rather than an independent assessment.
Why it matters: 86% of facilities reported a severe nurse shortage; the VA's actual nurse vacancy rate was 9.1% in July. Both are true. Reading the wrong instrument means arguing about the wrong thing while VHA loses roughly 3,000 nurses in a year.
